Civic Conversations

UNIV 170 003 (1 credit): Civic Conversations

What  is  Civic Conversations?

Civic Conversations is a one-credit course focused on civic engagement and political dialogue.

Background on Civic Conversations

In a time of increasing political polarization, it can be hard to be politically engaged, especially with people who hold opposing viewpoints. The Civic Conversation course was established to address this challenge. Launched as the Civic Cornerstone Fellowship at the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy and adapted as the Civic Cornerstone course for our the GMU community, Civic Conversations offers a unique opportunity for students to connect across difference.

Civic Conversation students will come together weekly to cultivate:

  • Peer-to-peer dialogue skills through structured conversations with peers

  • Self-regulation skills through the incorporation of guided practices

  • Knowledge about the American political landscape

  • Connections to community organizations and ways to be civically engaged
