Requirements and Application Process

Our requirements for students wishing to become Civic Fellows are: 

  • Students must be in good academic standing with George Mason;   

  • Commit to 8-10 hours of service at their partner site;   

  • Commit to attending bi-weekly meetings of the Civic Fellows program and participating in any activities of the program;

  • Attend Civic Fellows Orientation

Our application process for students is:

  • First Round: The Application

    • Application will open on July 27th via Handshake;

    • Students will submit their résumés and complete a Student Information Form

    • The application will close on August 31st

    • On September 1st or 2nd, chosen applicants will be emailed a sign-up link for two days of interviews with Community Partners

  • Second Round: The Interviews

    • Interviews will take place on September 10th and 11th via Zoom 

    • This is the time, as a potential Fellow, to ask organizations about partner expectations, tasks, location, and other questions that come to mind

    • Following interviews, students will note their top 3 Partner choices

  • Selection

    • The first round of students will be notified about their Community Partner matches by September 14th. We may be able to accept more students that week if we have spots remaining or if the first round declines the offer.

    • Our mandatory 2026 Civic Fellow Orientation will be on October 2nd

    • Lastly, October 6th is when Placements begin

Other important points about working as a Fellow and applying:

  • Students can participate in the program with their VISA status in consideration​

  • Background checks are required for some sites​

  • Must be a current full time GMU student and you must not be graduating in fall of 2026.
