Peer Leader Positions

Peer Leader for Education

George Mason University's Center for Community Engagement & Civic Learning (CECiL) invites applications for the position of CECiL Peer Leader for Education. This role is housed within the CECiL Peer Leaders Program and reports to the Associate Director. The Peer Leader Lead will work closely with a designated CECiL staff member and participate in weekly meetings. These meetings provide opportunities for mentorship, professional development, program planning, and collaboration.

The CECiL Peer Leader will assist with events and workshops and other duties as assigned.

This position will work 8-10 hours per week.

Position Responsibilities: 

General Duties

  • Assist with the development, marketing and delivery of CECiL workshops to student organizations, courses, etc. 

    • The Peer Leaders for Education will be responsible for managing presentation requests and delivering workshops as available. 

  • Stay up to date with upcoming CECiL events and assist with the planning, promotion and day-of logistics. 

    • Events include but are not limited to: CECiL's annual service fair, the Engage! event series, Community Partner breakfasts

Student Leadership & Professional Development

  • Attend required ambassador meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.

  • Collaborate with fellow ambassadors and CECiL staff on special projects and initiatives.

  • Develop skills in public speaking, event planning, communication, community engagement, and leadership.

  • Will assist other Peer Leaders with office functions including and not limited to front desk duties, assisting general inquiries, website updates, etc. 

 Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be a current George Mason University student with a strong interest in civic engagement, and a desire to engage with 

  • Event planning

  • Workshop facilitation

  • Social Media management. 

Student must be available to work in person on the Fairfax campus. Occasional hybrid options will be available. 

Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, reliability, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to supporting CECiL's mission of civic learning and community engagement.

Peer Leader for Service

The Office of Community Engagement & Civic Learning (CECiL) is hiring for a Peer Leader for Service to serve as a Reading Program Volunteer Leader. The Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning works to provide opportunities for students in get more involved in volunteerism and civic engagement. In Collaboration with a local nonprofit, Creative and Performing Arts Center (CAPAC), this reading volunteer program will recruit George Mason students to support local elementary school students in Prince William County Public Schools to improve their reading literacy and reading confidence. 

This reading program, Reader’s Theater, is special! Reader's Theater is a reading style founded in the performing arts, that is a collaborative, dramatic reading activity where participants read from a script aloud without memorizing lines or having elaborate costumes or complex staging. George Mason University students will use this reading style with the elementary age students and will incorporate STEAM components. The reading program will take place in the Spring 2027 semester, however, CECiL is hiring the Reading Program Volunteer Leader to start in the Fall 2026 semester to assist in planning, marketing, and recruitment of the program and volunteers. This reading style is highly effective for building reading fluency, public speaking confidence, and text comprehension through repeated, expressive reading. The end of the Reading Program for the elementary students will conclude with a live-reading on stage at the Hylton Performing Arts Center at our Sci-Tech Campus. 

Position Responsibilities:   

Recruitment: 

  • Recruit George Mason student volunteers to participate in the Reader's Theater program through outreach, tabling, presentations, and campus marketing initiatives. 

  • Assist with the development of marketing and promotional materials (flyers, social media posts, etc) to increase awareness of the program and encourage volunteer participation. 

Leadership: 

  • Serve as a Peer Leader by supporting, motivating, and mentoring student volunteers throughout the 10-week reading program, and the time leading up to the program. 

  • Collaborate closely with the full-time CECiL staff supervisor and community partner to plan and implement aspects of the Reader's Theater program. 

Volunteer Management:  

  • Assist with volunteer onboarding, including orientation, training, communication, and preparation for volunteer activities. 

  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and positive environment for George Mason volunteers, elementary school students, and community partners. 

  • Respond professionally to volunteer questions, concerns, scheduling conflicts, and challenges, escalating issues to the CECiL supervisor as appropriate. 

  • Support student volunteer accountability by tracking participation, communicating expectations, and encouraging consistent engagement. 

  • Assist with planning and supporting special events, volunteer trainings, recognition activities, and the culminating Reader's Theater performance at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. 

  • Work collaboratively with fellow Peer Leaders and CECiL staff to continuously improve the volunteer experience and program operations.

Qualifications Required: 

  • Current undergraduate student at George Mason University 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 

  • Organizational and time-management abilities 

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment 

  • Comfortable engaging with diverse student and community populations 

  • Self-motivated and able to manage multiple tasks with supervision 

  • Interest in community engagement, volunteerism, civic learning, education, literacy, or youth development. 

  • Interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education and enthusiasm for using the arts to introduce STEM concepts to elementary school students. 

  • Experience with event planning, marketing, social media promotion, volunteer leadership, or working with youth is preferred but not required. 

Compensation:   

  • Part-Time, Paid position ($16 an hour) 

  • 10-12 hours per week (flexible within office hours, Mon–Fri 8am–5pm) 

  • On-Campus availability required and hybrid option available 

  • Some evening and occasional weekend hours may be required to support events, meetings, and special programs.  

  • Weekly schedules will be developed in collaboration with the supervising CECiL staff member and are designed to accommodate academic commitments.  

Peer Leader for Engagement

George Mason University's Center for Community Engagement & Civic Learning (CECiL) invites applications for the position of CECiL Peer Leader for Engagement with one open position. This role is housed within the CECiL Peer Leaders Program and reports to the Program Manager for Engaged Learning. The Coalition Lead will work closely with a designated CECiL staff member and participate in weekly meetings with fellow Peer Leaders. These meetings provide opportunities for mentorship, professional development, program planning, and collaboration. 

The CECiL Peer Leader for Engagement serves as the primary support for coalition events, workshops, outreach initiatives, trainings, and promotional activities. The student will assist with event planning, outreach and marketing efforts, student organization recruitment, and tracking participant engagement while helping create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, and community partners. 

Position Responsibilities:  

Coalition Engagement & Support 

  • Serve as a student representative and primary point of contact for the CECiL Coalition and affiliated student organizations. 

  • Track coalition member participation, engagement, and organizational involvement. 

  • Maintain communication with coalition members regarding meetings, events, and opportunities. 

  • Support the onboarding and engagement of new coalition members and organizations. 

  • Represent CECiL and the Coalition in a professional and welcoming manner. 

Recruitment & Outreach 

  • Recruit student organizations and student leaders to participate in coalition initiatives. 

  • Conduct outreach through tabling, presentations, social media, and campus engagement activities. 

  • Promote coalition programs, events, and opportunities to the George Mason community. 

  • Foster relationships with student organizations, campus departments, and community partners. 

  • Assist with the creation and distribution of promotional materials. 

Meeting Planning & Facilitation 

  • Assist with planning and coordinating coalition meetings and collaborative events. 

  • Facilitate regular coalition meetings and discussions with student organization representatives. 

  • Prepare meeting agendas, discussion topics, and supporting materials. 

  • Document meeting notes and track action items and follow-up activities. 

  • Support logistical needs including scheduling, room reservations, and communications. 

Student Leadership & Professional Development 

  • Attend required ambassador meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities. 

  • Collaborate with fellow Ambassador Leads and CECiL staff on special projects and initiatives. 

  • Develop skills in leadership, facilitation, coalition-building, and community engagement. 

  • Serve as a positive advocate for civic engagement and student involvement at George Mason University. 

  • Facilitates semesterly meetings of the Coalition helping members coordinate event planning, outreach efforts, and program implementation. 

  • Will assist other ambassador leads with office functions including and not limited to front desk duties, assisting general inquiries, website updates, etc. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Expected commitment of up to 10 hours per week during the academic year.

  • Weekly schedules will be developed in collaboration with the supervising CECiL staff member and are designed to accommodate academic commitments.
