Just as there are a variety of ways to be civically engaged, there are a variety of civic engagement projects for this year's MLK Day of Service. Some are all virtual, some are a mixture of a virtual information session and then a Do It Yourself project at home that you can drop off at a later time, and some are in-person. Check out the opportunities below, and register today!
Volunteer Fairfax MLK Weekend of Service
Held on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service — a “day on, not a day off.” This day of service helps to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, address social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
Volunteer Fairfax will host and promote many volunteer service opportunities for all ages to ensure that families, teens, and grandparents share in the ethic of volunteerism and service to our communities.
The Capital Area Food Bank leads our region’s efforts to provide equitable access to food and opportunity to people struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Each year, we source and distribute the food for over 45 million meals.
MLK Day of Service Clean-up at Four Mile Run Park

Come out for a land-based litter clean-up at Four Mile Run, on the day of service in recognition and remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Our effort will focus on litter in the restoration meadow area and the Sunnyside tributary stream, both of which are in much need of attention. Sturdy shoes with good traction are recommended.
Note: as a COVID-19 precaution, advance registration is requested, and face masks are required during arrival. Even though we will be outdoors, social distancing is recommended

Help So What Else and our community partner beautify the learning spaces and grounds of our Wingate location!
Volunteers will help with painting, organizing and cleaning of the learning spaces (interior) and basic gardening / clean up (exterior).
Tools and onsite guidance will be provided! In case of inclement weather only the interior work will be performed.

MLK Day of Service: Trash Cleanup/Invasive Ivy Removal

Please join the National Park Service (NPS) for a Potomac River shoreline trash cleanup and removing invasive English ivy from trees on Monday, January 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. You can chose either activity. We will follow social distancing protocols and provide gloves, tools, trash bags and hand sanitizer. No prior plant identification experience required.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - Film and Discussion

Since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday became a holiday in 1983, many have taken this day as a day of service. Project PLASE will be holding a day of service to acknowledge all that he did for civil rights during his lifetime, and all of the steps which still need to be taken for racial equity and civil rights.
From 2pm to 4pm we will be holding a viewing of a short film, followed by a discussion on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and non-violence.

From 9am to noon we will be going around our neighborhood and cleaning up the area for our community members.
We would love for as many volunteers to come out and help as possible. This is a great opportunity for groups and individuals who want to acknowledge Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day. We will be handing out free Project PLASE t-shirts to all who come out an help! Come have fun with us while making our neighborhood squeaky clean!
