Indigenous Culture, Education, and Equity: Guatemala

Estimated Cost: $585 for Spring and ~$800 for Summer (Note: Prices do not include transport/airfare. Flights are generally around $500, but can change depending on different variables. Programming costs estimates and are subject to change.)

Through a partnership with Kamalbe Spanish School & Volunteer Center in Xela, Guatemala, students provide assistance a local elementary school in the Xecanchavox community with nutrition lessons. This local, rural, community is majority indigenous, so students learn about the complexities of indigeneity in Latin America. Students also work on special projects in the afternoons such as community beautification, school remodeling, videography as determined by community need. 

This year, there will be both a Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 trips to Guatemala. Both applications are open now. 

 

Guatemala

Transportation: Flight to Guatemala City (not staying here) and bus with drivers

Dates: March 7-14th (Spring), May 20-31st (Summer)

Housing: Homestay with families in Xela

Community Partner: Kamalbe School – Education and Indigenous Rights
